The Interactive-Body workshop is an bio-inspired design workshop which hold the crucial concept of "Hyper-Morphology" stated below. The goal of the workshop is to inspire the participants by the concept and knowledge of natural morphology within the idea of cellular based component.
[Hyper-Morphology]: Hyper-Morphology outlines a bio-inspired evolutionary design process with a primary focus on cellular differentiation, adaptation and self-organization via collective decision-making processes. This idea of Hyper-Morphology will be considered as the main guideline for developing the workshop's design projects. Participants need to know the basic generic process of cellular differentiation to see how the genetic rule sets drive the whole morphologic growing process of organisms in nature. Meanwhile, by understanding the logic of Signal Induction, which refers to cascades of signaling events, during which a cell or tissue signals to another cell or tissue to influence its developmental fate, participants will get the inspiration of how they can implement and experiment this kind of bio-inspired evolutionary design processes for adaptive spaces via collective decision making of autonomous architectural components.
Introduction + Hyper-Morphology Ideas + Basic Technical Study + Design Brain Storming: Introducing the whole idea about the workshop, the main concept of Hyper-Morphology, basic Arduino techniques, and assigning each group the task for brain storming.
Advanced Technical Study + Grasshopper (Firefly) Simulation + Design Development: Tutoring more advanced and applicable Arduino techniques (+ Digital Fabrication Techniques), Grasshopper simulation examples (with Firefly plug-in), and developing group design based on the techniques of technical study.
Design Development + Physical Computational Prototype + Digital Fabrication (1st tryout) Further developing the project and starting to use the digital fabrication technique (Laser cutting) to build up the first component tryout.(+Group tutoring at the same time)
Design Development + Physical Computational Prototype + Digital Fabrication (2nd tryout) Physical prototyping the 2nd tryout for modifying and fixing the lack of the first prototype. Starting to experiment the projects combining numbers of components as an architectural organs. Working on the final prototype and the final presentation. (+Group tutoring at the same time)
Physical Computational Prototype + Final Project + Review Finishing the prototypes, each group will present their project including design concept, process, and physical prototype for the final review.
Each group should combine their own architectural elements with any furniture function (defined by groups) to come up with the transformation result between architectural element and furniture though geometric transformation, such as:
In the end, there will be 6 different prototypes related to different architectural elements with furniture function based on the idea of cellular-component based emergent body.
